Describe your personality and character: I’m very outgoing, very straight-forward and very matter-of-fact. I’m honest and I’m always there for my friends and family.
How do you think others would describe you? My family knows me as being self-motivated, caring, and reliable. My friends know me as being outgoing, forgiving, and someone who will always be there for them, day or night. My co-workers know me as being punctual, outspoken and passionate.
What would you say is your strongest personal trait and why? My strongest personal trait often times proves to be my weakest. My mother’s always told me that since I was a little girl, I was always very nurturing. She said she always knew I would grow up and want to help people. As a nurse, my strongest personal trait has always been compassion for my patients and their families. It’s the most rewarding part of my job but also the most heartbreaking. I think a large part of being a great nurse is to care for people as if they were your own family, but unfortunately I sometimes get too attached and when things don’t turn out well, it often leaves me devastated.
What is your favorite sport? I love to play volleyball but I must admit that I haven’t really played since middle school and am quite certain I would not be any good at it now. I love to watch football, but I’ll only get emotional over it if it’s the Miami Hurricanes!
Describe your own athletic ability/skills: I used to play volleyball well. Now, I primarily run or hike on short trails in the canyons.
What is your favorite type of music? I enjoy music of all types. When I was very young, I loved classical music and would be excited to learn to play it on my piano. When I was in my teenage years, I discovered 1990s rock and in my college years I listened to appreciate classic rock and the music my parents grew up with. Now I listen to it all and I also incorporate pop, soft pop/rock, acoustic guitar, Spanish and opera into the mix.
Why is this your favorite type of music? Different types of music are great for different things. Classical music and opera I find are the most beautiful. It’s very rich and calms me down when I’m in rush hour traffic. I listen to acoustic/Spanish guitar when I’m at home and cooking or having company over. I like to listen to classical rock sometimes because nothing composed today sounds anything close to it or has as much quality. And, it reminds me of driving around town with my dad in his car. I also love listening to pop or something with a good beat when I’m getting ready for a night out.
Describe your own musical abilities/skills: I’ve played the piano since I was 6 years old and plan on playing it my entire life. It’s the only thing that relaxes me. I briefly played the clarinet from 4th-8th grade and was first chair in the band. I’m currently trying my hand at the guitar.
Describe any other special talents, skills, hobbies or interests you may have: I really enjoy skiing when it’s in season and I love the beach during all other seasons!
What is your favorite book? Shakespeare’s “Romeo and Juliet”
Why? I know it’s a book that everyone reads, which makes it less impressive, but the dialogue is written so eloquently that it makes me cry every time.
What is your favorite movie? I Am Sam and A Beautiful Mind
Why? “I Am Sam” is such a heartfelt story about an adult with autism trying to raise a child. It poses some interesting questions about life and love and incorporates a lot of Beatles’ songs into its theme. It’s really beautifully done. I also love “A Beautiful Mind” because it shows the real schizophrenic mind at work. Most people are scared of the man on the side of the street talking to himself but through this movie, you can see things from that perspective and hopefully gain a little compassion.
Describe your own artistic abilities/skills: I can draw and sketch well. Painting has never been a forte, but I am a great appreciator of it.
Have you had any unique travel experiences that you feel have helped shape your way of thinking and/or the way you live your life?
I went to Italy and Greece on a field trip in high school and although we visited a lot of galleries and saw a lot of fine art, what I remembered most was the friendliness of the people in those countries. They were very family oriented and very open and generous. When I came back to the US, I was surprised at how introverted and sometimes cold we can be to our neighbors. I now make it a point to be as polite and hospitable as I can because it does make a difference to people, even if it’s only subtle.
Have you had any unique educational experiences? I was fortunate enough to learn about eh International Baccalaureate Program when I was in middle school. I applied for it and was accepted to it and enrolled throughout high school. My classmates and I were held to a higher standard than traditional students and I was surrounded by competitive and intelligent classmates, which forced me to push myself and my expectations of myself even further than what I had expected of myself. The program exposed me to a lot of different cultures by taking us on month long field trips to Europe and I’ve formed lasting friendships with many people through the program.
Have you had any unique experiences with volunteer work? I was a candy striper at a cancer center when I was in high school. I volunteered on a surgical oncology floor and helped care for a patient with esophageal cancer. She had been craving just a small glass of soda since her operation and was finally able to swallow food but there was none available on the floor so I brought her a glass from the cafeteria. She was so grateful, she gave me an embroidered cross she had made and a roll of quarters. What seemed like such a small thing to me meant a lot to her. It ultimately led me to my career in nursing.
If you were given enough funds to spend one year of your life to engage in any recreational, political, religious/spiritual, or other endeavor of particular importance to you, what would you choose to do? It’s a long shot considering the current state of our healthcare but I would love to raise awareness about the living conditions in many nursing homes and/or establish hospice homes where people who don’t have families or whose families cannot afford to care for them can go to spend the end of their lives in a comfortable place-a place that doesn’t look or feel like a hospital. I’ve seen too many people spend their last moments in a hospital bed and I think we should have more respect for our elders and give them a better place to rest. |
What is your philosophy on life? If you take care of the ones you love, they’ll take care of you.
How did you come to have this philosophy on life? Everything I’ve learned about having a fulfilling life, I’ve learned from my grandmother. She was the most generous person I knew. She loved to give and she received ten-fold. She was the happiest person I know, and I’d be lucky to follow in her footsteps.
What is your ultimate goal and ambition in life? I want everything any other American girl wants. I’m already happy and have a good, respected job. I want a house in the country with a garden where I can raise my family. I want a loving husband to share my dreams with. And I want my family by my side and my friends living down the street. The rest is all gravy.
How do you plan on achieving this goal? I’m still new to the ICU and I want a few more years to become more skilled but I eventually would love to work as a Neurosurgery Nurse Practitioner. As a nurse, I can already go anywhere in the US for a good job so I eventually want to move out of the big city and buy some property in a neighborhood where the people are friendly and where I could see myself retiring peacefully. Raising a family will come with time, so I’m trying to be patient.
Why do you want to be an egg donor? I can relate to a couple’s desire to have a baby, to bear a child of their own, to raise a family. If there is a couple whom I could help create that experience, I would gladly assist.
What do you think egg donation means to potential recipients? I think it means completing a family. It means being able to share your love and everything life has given you with someone else. It means being able to pass down everything you’ve learned and cherished to someone you love. It’s being able to give life to someone else.
What are your thoughts on egg donation as a fertility option? I think it’s a great option-it provides so many couples a chance to raise a family. |
